Fileserver Project
|
I got tired of the possibility of losing data, so for once I thought I'd set up a REAL fileserver with some serious disk space.
What I needed was a huge chassi, and front-slot drives. All SATA ofcourse, hooked up to Supermicro 8-Port SATA Card - (AOC-SAT2-MV8)
I've already decided on the filesystem to be used, Zettabyte Filesystem, aka ZFS. That limited the choice of operating systems somewhat. I found Nexenta which basically is Ubuntu but with a OpenSolaris kernel.

What's been ordered so far:
- 01 x TYAN THUNDER K8W DUAL OPTERON SKT-940
- 08 x 1GB Kingston RAM
- 02 x AMD dual core Opteron 285 2.6GHz
- 16 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
- 08 x Chieftec 2 x 5.25" bays for 3 S-ATA HDD, hotswap, aluminum
- 01 x Lian Li PC-343 Modular cube case
- 02 x Cooltek 600W PSU, ATX 2.2
- 03 x Supermicro 8-Port SATA Card
- plus fans and additional hardware for mounting.
So, a total of 24 disk slots and 2 x 3.5" slots currently free for some optical drive. Inside of the machine there'll be a cage for up to three more drives. That will be the root of the machine, and one roaming spare for the ZFS pools. I'm considering putting the root on a flash disk, as there are excellent PATA to compact flash converters. As long as you don't use them as a swap device, it should be all good.
The ZFS pools will consist of 3 * 8 disks in a raidz configuration.
Pictures and highlights will come here.
